Autism in Love

Last Monday, PBS showcased a beautiful documentary called Autism in Love, which follows the story of 4 adults on the autism spectrum as they explore the world of relationships, romance and sometimes marriage.

I often wonder if Arizona will have romantic relationships when she gets older. Right now, if you ask her, she’ll tell you she never plans to get married. She tells me that she’ll be happily married to herself, with a pet or two living with her.

All of this said, however, she has experienced puppy crushes on boys and finds those feelings too overwhelming to process at this early age.

However her future plays out, though, I do know she is a girl who can express her feelings and I am so grateful for that.

Watching Autism in Love was a special experience for me. I was extremely grateful that they showcased a female on the spectrum, as it is rare for me to see what type of blueprint the future might hold for my girl.

About the film :

Finding love can be hard enough for anyone, but for those on the autism spectrum, the challenges may seem overwhelming. The disorder can jeopardize the core characteristics of a successful relationship — communication and social interaction. Autism in Love offers a warm and stereotype-shattering look at four people with autism as they pursue and manage romantic relationships.

  1. This sounds amazing I live in the uk and will try to track this down!

My blog is all about my marriage and life with my husband who has autism. I never really see anything about adults and love. It’s normally all focused on parents. I always wanted something for parents to read when they were having these moments of ‘will my child find love?’
