(Summer is here!)

Summer is here and parents can find themselves scrambling to find the perfect placement for their children with needs. Certainly, as my workload has increased over the past year, I also found myself paying extra attention to finding the summer curriculum that best fits Arizona’s needs and mine.

Turns out, I am doing a mix of things; as most of us have had to do.

And, for those of you in the Los Angeles area, I wanted to share some of the summer camps and programs I have found for our kids :

  1. Social Foundations : based in Santa Monica, Arizona will attend 5 weeks here this summer. She attended last year for the first time and loved it so much, she hasn’t stopped talking about it since. This camp will provide a unique and positive camp experience for children who need social learning support in a creative and fun environment. Good for students ages 7 and up.
  1. Camp Escapades : Put on by the Pediatric Therapy Network in the South Bay (Rolling Hills Estates), Camp Escapades is a summer day camp for children with special needs (ages 5-14) that runs for two weeks in August.
  1. JPAC : Special Needs Network’s Joe Patton Academy Camp (JPAC Summer Inclusion Camp) serves as a safe, fun haven for over 300 students ages 5-16. It is the only summer inclusion camp in Los Angeles for special needs children and their siblings. Camp runs from July 11 – August 5, 2016.
  1. Friendship Island : Erika Rich puts on a social skills summer camp for current Kindergarten through fourth grade students. Dr. Erika Rich will also offer parent seminars during each week of the camp, providing guidelines for how parents can better facilitate social interactions.
  1. Pacific Point Academy : The summer program at Pacific Point Academy offers eight weeks of enrichment to help prevent the ‘summer slide’ and diminish a child’s gap between ability and achievement, all while having fun and making friends. Located in Santa Monica, each student receives an individualized program based on their needs.

Note: some of these programs offer full ride scholarships. In addition, you can also check with your regional center coordinator and request funding for a one on one aide.

What other summer programs have you found for special needs children? What would you like to see in a day camp for your child / children?
