(Arizona and her new aide, Ms. Denise)

It’s our 3rd year at the public school in our neighborhood and I still pinch myself that my commute is all of 3 minutes (driving) or 10 minutes (walking).

It hasn’t been an easy road getting Arizona into a mainstream classroom with all of the support she needs, but I have to acknowledge my child here : she is the one who has done the hard work.

Sometimes I observe her daily struggles with the things that most of us take for granted and marvel at the progress she has made within the last 10 years.

Leaving school after drop off today, I started to think about what it took for us to get to this moment and have a hard time comprehending the THOUSANDS of hours we have spent in occupational therapy, speech therapy, behavior therapy, equine therapy, social skills classes, psychological assessments, doctor’s appointments, therapeutic rock climbing classes, biomedical interventions, DAN treatments, regional center classes, neurofeedback therapy, parenting classes, support groups, acupuncture, naturopathic and homeopathic interventions, educational therapy, swim lessons, vision therapy, marriage counseling and more. The list is endless.

For this and so much more, I am grateful for today; for a fresh start, a new year, a bright future. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
