Embracing Change

A lot of unexpected things happened within the past few months : a surprise appendectomy, sad news about a fellow special needs mom passing from cancer, a costly auto repair, Arizona adjusting to the meaty load of 3rd grade homework, mercury in retrograde, the black moon – ha! The list goes on..

Like Arizona, I’m not a fan of surprises and unexpected happenings. Even at the ripe age of 42, I find transitions and changes difficult to manage. Yes, I have figured out ways to cope and manage when things don’t go as planned; write in my journal, call a girlfriend, turn up the self care a notch.

But what I have recently discovered, a concept foreign to me most of my life, is the practice of actually embracing the change. This shift happened for me as I was learning to rest after appendix surgery. Instead of whining about my inability to DO anything; I actually leaned into the reality that my body just needed to rest. And guess what I discovered? Rest was GOOD. The recharge set in motion a number of creative projects and ideas that I am so excited about. It’s interesting what happens when you really listen to what you need.

So, I have learned to slow down and enjoy LIFE more. It will continue to ebb and flow and I am sure I will have those days when I just want to bury my head in the sand. But in the meantime, I’m good. Happy. Even with the unexpected.
