Sesame Street has introduced its first character with autism, an orange-haired girl named Julia. Bringing this character to life is part of a new initiative to bring more awareness to autism.
A digital book entitled “Amazing, 1,2,3” is now available online and in print. It tells Julia’s story and highlights her differences as well as her strengths! The story was written by Leslie Kimmelman, a mother inspired by her own son’s autism diagnosis.
Sesame Street partnered with organizations like Autism Speaks and the Autism Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN) to make sure that the materials presented by the brand were educational, respectful, and positive about autism.
